The beginning is the most important part of the work. – Plato
Well I guess this is it, our first post. Are we supposed to say something profound? Something deep and meaningful? …or just a cheesy welcome? It seems like forever that this idea has been floating around and both of us have had thoughts about doing something like this for ages so the thought of actually sitting here writing the first post has me a little stumped. I guess a bit of background to our thoughts about this site and what we want it to be will be most apt…
As mentioned this idea has been something we have wanted to pursue for a long time, we even tried starting it a few years ago, with a different name and as part of a different website however things just didn’t seem right. We were quite underprepared for the challenges involved in putting the site together during a time in our lives when we were planning a wedding and planning our future together. Things just didn’t fall into place in regards to getting the idea and website off-the-ground and the house we were living in at the time was not ideal of what we wanted to achieve – the kitchen, far to small and cramped and to be honest life just got in the way. The project was stalled, put on hold and almost forgotten about until we got to the point we are at now.
Fast forward a couple of years and allot has changed, things have settled down and the timing seems to feel right to try again. With a family of three now, rather than two we have had allot of time to reflect on what we are doing and where we want to go with our lives. The birth of our daughter has by far been the biggest (best) challenge we have had to face but has also become the most rewarding part of our life that we wouldn’t change for the world. As cliché as it sounds our daughter has given us a new perspective on everything and changed how we see our place in the world and has given us new ideas and opportunities to pursue that we wouldn’t have previously had the chance to do – this website being one of them.
Accompanying us for this journey is our beautiful new home, built just under a year ago (finished 10 days before our daughter arrived!) – which, most importantly and relevant to this little blog is the fact that we finally have the perfect kitchen and entertaining space we have always longed for. With plenty of room for both of us to move around in and space for all of the little nick knacks and appliances we have collected over the years, as well as properly functioning appliances (that we have mostly learnt how to use) things seem to just feel right to get this project going once more.
Although we still don’t really know what we are doing and we won’t ever claim to be professional chefs, or even fantastic cooks we still feel that we have a story to tell to anyone who wants to follow along.
The heart of this website is going to be about experimenting and having fun and growing together as a family and it will give us a great opportunity to share a hobby we have both have had for as long as we can remember, cooking.
We have chosen to begin the website with a goal of at least trying to cook and re-create as many recipes as possible from the huge collection of cookbooks, website bookmarks, Pinterest Pins and magazines we have found over many years.
At the time we found and collected these recipes, cookbooks and magazines we always had such high intentions to one day actually put them to use, but to date we probably couldn’t name 10 recipes that have been cooked from all of our extensive collection. Whilst it may not be the most original idea we think we can create something we will be proud of and enjoy doing along the way.
From sweet and savoury dishes, starters, main courses, desserts, snacks, cocktails, smoothies and everything in-between we will try to cover as much as we can – including some kid-friendly food for our little one, who has just sprouted her first tooth.
Combined with the recipes we will try to accompany each post with some great photography and some (possibly) insightful writing, musings and thoughts. Our opinions will be our own and if something doesn’t work or go to plan we won’t sugar-coat it and we will be honest with our writings.
We look forward to beginning this project and hope others will enjoy following as much as we enjoy creating. We hope we will learn allot about food, life and each other along the way. So I guess all that is left to say is a very warm welcome and thank you.
